All about Bak Kut Teh

Last week, we visited the Restoran Ming Chow which selling Bak kut teh in Kampar. Ming Chow is a well-known bak kut teh restaurant among the students of Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman and the residents in Kampar.

History Background

Bak kut teh, literally meaning ‘meat bone tea’ is a very popular Chinese Malaysian dish. Bak kut teh is a Hokkien Chinese dish and is said to have been introduced by the Hokkien people from China to Malaysia more than a century ago.


Bak kut teh is a soup based dish which pork ribs cooked in a rich, savoury and fragrant herbal broth. The meaning of “bak” is pork, “kut” means rib and bones while “teh” is stand for tea.


It is a Chinese traditional food which it is known as a broth that include some ingredients such as pork ribs, lots of dried herbs, garlic, coriander seeds, ginger, pepper, cinnamon, cloves and star anise. The smell and taste of the bak kut teh is very delicious and attractive because it had included many types of spices.

The broth had found that it has positive benefits for rheumatism and also some health benefits bring to customer which can be found in the ingredient of the bak kut teh. For example, garlic is one of the ingredients that include in the broth and it can help to prevent from heart disease, avoid cancer, and control high blood pressure. More than that, pepper that included in the soup can help to fight the cancer and help in detox the skin.


Furthermore, the bak kut teh are usually served with Yu Char Kueh or “strips of fried dough” as side dishes. Even though the side dishes served are unhealthy but it is still very attractive to the customer, most of the customers are likely to have the side dishes.


Chinese tea is usually served along with the soup in the belief that it helps to dilute the abundant amount of fat consumed in this meat-laden dish.

Restoran Ming Chow is one of well-known restaurant in Kampar town and its most famous dish is bak kut teh. There is no specific group of customers this is because it attract customer from local residents, university students and also tourist.

The ingredient of Bak kut teh also include pork ribs, herbs and spice. Other ingredients normally included in a bowl of bak kut are fried tofu puffs, mushrooms, lettuce and pieces of dried tofu.

Customer also can order side dishes like Yu Char Kueh, lettuce, choy sum and more. Bak Kut Teh is serve in a flexible size since it can be order in according to the number of people.

Other than that, customers are willing to enjoy their meal in Restoran Ming Chow because the price charge is reasonable and acceptable price. The customers also feel that the portion of the dish served is worth for the price paid.

The dining environment is very clean and comfortable. The polite employee provide good and friendly service. The boss make sure everything is well in order to serve high quality of products.


The restaurant is alocated beside the main road to Ipoh. We took approximately 10 minutes away from Kampar. There is one Caltex petrol station around the restaurant. The latitude and longitude of restaurant are 4.4167°and 101.1667° respectively.
